Born on 16 October 1854, Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet and playwright who became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. He is best known for his epigrammatic wit and flamboyant style that defined his plays and novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Dying at an early age of 46, on 30 November 1900, Wilde left behind a significant body of work that has had a profound influence on 20th and 21st-century literature.
