Lev Chernyi was born on January 23, 1893, in Tambov, a city in the Russian Empire. He was a poet and a political activist, identified as an anarchist individualist. Chernyi was active in the revolutionary era of Russia, from 1917 to 1918, during which he joined the ranks of the anarchists fighting the Bolshevik regime.
He wrote a book, 'Associational Anarchism', in which he advocated for individual freedom and held firm against state authority. It is also noteworthy that Chernyi was an influential member in the Nabat, a confederation of anarchist organizations in Ukraine. However, his revolutionary actions ended tragically when he was arrested and subsequently executed by the Cheka (Bolshevik secret police) on September 21, 1921. The trial that led to his execution was highly publicized and was later referred to as a show trial. His thoughts and ideas have been incredibly influential within the school of individualist anarchism.
