Johann Most was born on February 5, 1846, in Augsburg, Germany. A significant figure in the anarchist movement, Most was a trade union activist before being expelled from the party for his radical ideas. Most emigrated to the United States in 1882, where he continued to advocate for radical social change. He was a proponent of 'propaganda of the deed' – the use of forceful tactics, including political violence, to inspire political activism.
Most passed away on March 17, 1906. Throughout his life, he was a vigorous advocate for workers' rights and a vocal critic of existing social structures. He wrote extensively, including editing the anarchist newspaper Freiheit and authoring the pamphlet 'The Science of Revolutionary Warfare'. His ideas and writings have continued to influence anarchist thought and the larger social justice movement. He is considered a foundational figure in anarchism, especially within the school of anarchist communism.
