Han Ryner, born Jacques Élie Henri Ambroise Ner on December 7, 1861 in Ardennes, France was a pacifist and anarchist philosopher, largely unknown during his lifetime, but recognized posthumously. Ryner's work focused on individualist anarchism and pacifism, strongly emphasizing personal freedom, nonviolent resistance and the inherent value of the individual. He also identified as an egoist, positing that self-interest was a fundamental human motive.
His main life achievement was his substantial contribution to anarchist literature, with works such as the mini-series of philosophical dialogues titled 'Petit Manuel Individualiste' (1903) becoming noteworthy examples of Ryner's writing style and ideological motivations. These works, among others, established Ryner as an important voice in French individual anarchy, further advanced his unique blend of anarchism and pacifism, and contributed significantly to the broader anarchist movement. Ryner died on June 6, 1938 in Paris, France.
