Élisée Reclus was born on 15 March 1830 in France. He was not only a prominent geographer of his time, but also an important figure in the anarchist movement. Reclus proposed that the world's resources should be shared equitably, and in his 19-volume work, 'The Earth and Its Inhabitants', he presented a holistic view of the Earth, not just as a physical entity, but as a complex system of human and non-human interactions. His concept of nature included the human, social and cultural aspects, marking a significant shift in geographical thought.
Apart from his extensive geographical works, Reclus made notable contributions to the field of anarchism. His ideas of mutual aid and voluntary cooperation formed the basis of anarcho-communism. He was a fervent advocate of direct action and a strong critic of state power. His writings inspired many anarchists and social reformers.
